Connecting Forgejo and Plane — The PORT-N Branch Protocol

In modern software engineering, disconnecting project planning from version control is an operational antipattern. When issues live in a project board while commits and pull requests happen in isolation, project boards rapidly become out of date, and tracking why a specific feature was modified requires tedious manual archaeology.

Across my self-hosted platform, I enforce the PORT-N protocol: a strict, automated integration linking our self-hosted Plane issue tracker with our self-hosted Forgejo git forge. Every piece of work is traceable from initial concept to production deployment.

The development lifecycle begins with a ticket in Plane, which assigns a sequential identifier (e.g. `PORT-24`). When starting implementation, the developer or AI agent creates a git branch in Forgejo following the strict pattern `feature/PORT-24-short-description` or `fix/PORT-24-short-description`.
